Afterschool Alliance

Organizations across the country supported the 2020 Census. We regularly featured some of them here, looking at who they are and why an accurate census is so important to them.

Organization Name: Afterschool Alliance

Headquarters: Washington, D.C.

About:

Afterschool Alliance works to ensure that all youth have access to affordable, quality afterschool programs by engaging public will to increase public and private investment in afterschool program initiatives at the national, state, and local levels. The Alliance focuses first on underserved and disadvantaged children and communities.

Millions of the children and youth Afterschool Alliance serves rely on federal support to attend afterschool and summer learning programs—support that is determined by the decennial census.

The Afterschool Alliance created a toolkit to inform after-school providers about the 2020 Census and how to get involved. Despite closures and restrictions due to COVID-19, the Alliance continued to publicize safe ways that after-school programs and staff members could help ensure that families are counted. From including census reminders in upcoming emails and newsletters to encouraging census response as part of check-in calls with families, the organization was committed to making a difference in the 2020 Census.

“It is vital for families to hear from members already embedded in their communities that the census is fair and safe to complete, as well as why it is important for them to complete it. Afterschool programs are an incredible resource for our communities, and we should tap into their expertise and ask for their help to ensure an accurate count in the 2020 Census.”

– Jodi Grant, Afterschool Alliance Executive Director
