This report explores a wide array of characteristics of contemporary grandparents and grandchildren, mainly focusing on households in which grandparents and grandchildren live together. Additionally, some analyses compare coresident grandparents to noncoresident grandparents. To present findings as comprehensively as possible, this report presents data from four sources: the 1970–2000 Censuses, the 2005–2021 American Community Survey (ACS), the 1992–2022 Current Population Survey (CPS), and the 2021 Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP). By capitalizing upon the strengths of each source of data, this report provides a rich portrait of grandparents and their households throughout the country.
