Written by:
Report Number P70BR-183

Introduction

Wealth is an important indicator of economic well-being that provides valuable insights into a household’s economic health. For example, during financial hardships, such as unemployment, illness, or divorce, wealth is a source of liquidity to pay expenses and bills. This brief uses the 2022 Survey of Income and Program Participation to examine household wealth in 2021.

For additional detailed wealth data, refer to the national Wealth, Asset Ownership, & Debt of Households Detailed Tables and State-Level Wealth, Asset Ownership, & Debt of Households Tables. These tables provide wealth and debt measures for a variety of demographic, social, and household characteristics, including information on home equity, retirement accounts, vehicle debt, credit card debt, and student loans.
