Report Number p70br-157

Introduction

Data on monthly social insurance program participation and benefit recipient amounts for the 2014 calendar year were collected in the 2014 Wave 2 Panel of the Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP). This brief discusses participation rates and monthly payments for Social Security retirement and disability, Department of Veterans Affairs benefits, unemployment compensation and workers' compensation.  About 23.8 percent of individuals aged 18 and older reported receiving income from one or more of these social insurance programs.  About 72 percent received Social Security retirement benefits, about 18 percent received Social Security disability benefits.  The next largest source was unemployment compensation, which was received by about 7 percent of recipients. About 5 percent of all recipients received veterans' disability benefits, followed closely by workers' compensation at about 3 percent.  For more information, please visit the SIPP website at www.census.gov/sipp.
