In 2013, U.S. nonfarm businesses with employees spent a total of $330.9 billion on noncapitalized and capitalized information and communication technology (ICT) equipment, including computer software.(See Summary Table A below, and Tables 1a and 1b). Noncapitalized ICT spending in 2013 was $118.0 billion (35.7 percent of total ICT spending). Capitalized ICT spending in 2013 was $212.9 billion (64.3 percent of total ICT spending).

Of total noncapitalized ICT spending in 2013 ($118.0 billion), purchases of ICT equipment accounted for $23.2 billion (19.6 percent). Operating leases and rental payments accounted for $16.4 billion (13.9 percent). Computer software expenditures accounted for $78.4 billion (66.5 percent).
Computer and peripheral equipment accounted for $14.8 billion (63.9 percent) of the $23.2 billion spent on noncapitalized ICT purchases. ICT equipment excluding computers and peripherals accounted for $8.0 billion (34.4 percent). Electromedical and electrotherapeutic apparatuses accounted for $0.4 billion (1.7 percent).
Computer and peripheral equipment accounted for $10.5 billion (64.0 percent) of the $16.4 billion spent on operating leases and rental payments. ICT equipment excluding computers and peripherals accounted for $4.9 billion (29.9 percent). Electromedical and electrotherapeutic apparatus accounted for $1.0 billion (6.1 percent).
Of the $78.4 billion spent on noncapitalized computer software, $33.1 billion (42.2 percent) was for purchases and payroll for developing software, and $45.3 billion (57.8 percent) was for software licensing and service/maintenance agreements. (See Summary Table B below, Tables 1a and 1b.)

Of total capitalized ICT spending in 2013 ($212.9 billion), purchases of ICT equipment accounted for $122.9 billion (57.7 percent). Capitalized purchases and payroll for developing software accounted for $90.0 billion (42.3 percent).
Of the $122.9 billion spent on capitalized ICT purchases, computer and peripheral equipment accounted for $65.1 billion (53.0 percent), ICT equipment excluding computers and peripherals accounted for $52.8 billion (43.0 percent).
