2011 Capital Spending Report: U.S. Capital Spending Patterns 2000-2009

Sector-level Highlights

Manufacturing

Between 2000 and 2009, investment spending in the manufacturing sector declined from $214.8 billion to $155.8 billion. This $59.0 billion decline was the second largest of all sectors. In addition, the sector’s share of total investment spending decreased from 19.7 percent to 15.4 percent. In 2009, investment spending in the manufacturing sector decreased by $57.3 billion from the 2008 total of $213.1 billion. However, the sector’s share of total investment spending in 2009 (15.4 percent) was not statistically different from the 2008 share of 16.5 percent. (Table 2a, Table 3a, in report)

Utilities

Between 2000 and 2009, investment spending in the utilities sector increased from $61.3 billion to $101.8 billion. The sector’s share of total spending increased from 5.6 percent to 10.0 percent. Investment spending in the utilities sector in 2009 was not statistically different from 2008. However, the sector’s share of total spending increased from 7.6 percent to 10.0 percent. Mining

Between 2000 and 2009, investment spending in the mining sector increased from $42.5 billion to $101.2 billion. During this period, spending growth in mining in absolute terms ($58.7 billion) exceeded spending growth in all other sectors. In addition, the sector’s share of total spending increased from 3.9 percent to 10.0 percent. In 2009, investment spending in the mining sector decreased by $48.1 billion from the 2008 total of $149.3 billion. In addition, the sector’s share of total spending decreased from 11.5 percent to 10.0 percent. (Table 2a, Table 3a, in report)

Finance and Insurance

Between 2000 and 2009, investment spending in the finance and insurance sector decreased from $133.7 billion to $99.7 billion. The sector’s share of total investment spending decreased from 12.3 percent to 9.8 percent. In 2009, investment spending in the finance and insurance sector decreased by $33.2 billion from the 2008 total of $132.9 billion. The sector’s share of total investment spending decreased from 10.3 percent to 9.8 percent. (Table 2a, Table 3a, in report)

Information

Between 2000 and 2009, investment spending in the information sector decreased from $160.2 billion to $87.7 billion. During this period, spending in the information sector decreased in absolute terms by $72.5 billion, more than any other sector. The sector’s share of total spending decreased from 14.7 percent to 8.6 percent. In 2009, investment spending in the information sector decreased by $15.6 billion from the 2008 total of $103.3 billion. However, the sector’s share of total investment spending increased from 8.0 percent to 8.6 percent. (Table 2a, Table 3a, in report)

Health Care and Social Assistance

Between 2000 and 2009, investment spending in the health care and social assistance sector increased from $52.2 billion to $79.3 billion. In addition, the sector’s share of total spending increased from 4.8 percent to 7.8 percent. In 2009, investment spending in the health care and social assistance sector decreased by $10.9 billion from the 2008 total of $90.2 billion. However, the sector’s share of total investment spending increased from 7.0 percent to 7.8 percent. (Table 2a, Table 3a, in report)

Real Estate and Rental and Leasing

Between 2000 and 2009, investment spending in the real estate and rental and leasing sector decreased from $92.5 billion to $73.0 billion. In addition, the sector’s share of total spending decreased from 8.5 percent to 7.2 percent. In 2009, investment spending in the real estate and rental and leasing sector decreased by $33.9 billion from the 2008 total of $106.9 billion.
