Population Trends in the 1980's

Report Number P23-175

Overview

Presents in four chapters the patterns of population growth and migration, derived from estimates made year by year in the last decade. The report discusses trends not only In the Nation, but in States, in metropolitan areas, and (through 1984) in counties. The county data appear in multicolored maps.

A chapter on national trends includes demographic data such as sex, race, and Hispanic origin. It also covers the elements of population change: births, deaths, and net migration, with separate statistics for legal immigration.

One chapter generally assesses migration trends between States and larger areas. It also pinpoints migration between neighboring States.

A Note on Language

Census statistics date back to 1790 and reflect the growth and change of the United States. Past census reports contain some terms that today’s readers may consider obsolete and inappropriate. As part of our goal to be open and transparent with the public, we are improving access to all Census Bureau original publications and statistics, which serve as a guide to the nation's history.
