Money Income and Poverty Status of Families and Persons in the United States: 1986 (Advance Data From the March 1987 Current Population Survey)

Report Number P60-157

Introduction

This report presents data on the income and poverty status of families and persons in the United States for the calendar year 1986. These data were compiled from information collected in the March 1987 Current Population Survey (CPS) conducted by the Bureau of the Census. The survey consisted of 60,500 households nationwide and was designed mainly to produce reliable national estimates, though some data by region and metropolitan residence were also compiled and appear in this report. The estimates in this report represent the government's official annual poverty estimates.

A Note on Language

Census statistics date back to 1790 and reflect the growth and change of the United States. Past census reports contain some terms that today’s readers may consider obsolete and inappropriate. As part of our goal to be open and transparent with the public, we are improving access to all Census Bureau original publications and statistics, which serve as a guide to the nation's history.
