1970 Census - Poverty Status in 1969 and 1959 of Persons and Families, for States, SMSA's Central Cities, and Counties

PC(S1)-105

This report presents selected data on the poverty status in 1969 and 1959 of persons and families for the United States and for each of the states, counties, standard metropolitan statistical areas (SMSAs), and central cities of large SMSAs. The tables, which follow, bring together the most frequently requested comparable data for geographical areas from the 1970 and 1960 censuses. The report also includes previously unpublished 1970 census data on school-age children in poverty families and on the aged poor; comparable data are not available from the 1960 census.

This is the first time that data on poverty have been brought together which permit easy comparisons over time for many local areas. Data on the low-income status in 1969 and 1959 of persons and families are summarized for states in tables 1 and 2, for SMSAs in tables 5 and 6, and for counties in table 10. Additional characteristics of the population residing in large SMSAs (those with a population of 250,000 or more) are presented in tables 7, 8, and 9. Previously unpublished 1969 poverty data on school-age children and the aged by state are presented in tables 3 and 4, respectively. Most of the tables include data for Negro and other races by poverty status in 1969 and 1959. Data for the Spanish population are not included in this report since no information on poverty is available from the 1960 census for this group.

A Note on Language

Census statistics date back to 1790 and reflect the growth and change of the United States. Past census reports contain some terms that today’s readers may consider obsolete and inappropriate. As part of our goal to be open and transparent with the public, we are improving access to all Census Bureau original publications and statistics, which serve as a guide to the nation's history.
