1970 Census - Population: Distribution of Foreign Stock Population

Report Number PC(S1)-62

This report presents data from the 1970 census on the numbers and geographic distribution of the population of foreign stock in the United States. The figures have previously been published in various Volume I tables in the basic census reports, but they are being brought together here for convenient use.

Table 1 shows counts of the total foreign stock population, and of the foreign born and native of foreign or mixed parentage, separately, for the Nation as a whole, and for regions, divisions, each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia, standard metropolitan statistical areas (SMSA's) with 250,000 or more persons, and places of 100,000 or more persons. This table also shows the total foreign stock counts of 23 countries of origin with the same area detail.

Table 2 indicates the concentrations of individual foreign stock groups by presenting the following area detail for each foreign stock group: states having 100,000 or more persons of the particular foreign stock group; SMSAs with 50,000 or more persons of the foreign stock group; and places with 26,000 or more persons of the particular foreign stock group.

A Note on Language

Census statistics date back to 1790 and reflect the growth and change of the United States. Past census reports contain some terms that today’s readers may consider obsolete and inappropriate. As part of our goal to be open and transparent with the public, we are improving access to all Census Bureau original publications and statistics, which serve as a guide to the nation's history.
