This report presents data from the 1970 census on the numbers and geographic distribution of persons of Spanish ancestry. The 1970 census used four identifiers to provide statistical information for persons of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, or other Spanish background. Each of these identifiers provides useful information about people frequently referred to as "Spanish speaking"' or "Spanish Americans." The four identifiers are based, respectively, on origin, surname, language, and birthplace.

The data presented in this report are drawn from various other 1970 census reports and are consolidated here for the convenience of users. This report shows counts of the Spanish ancestry population for the country as a whole, regions, divisions, and states. In tables 2, 4, and 6, data are shown for those standard metropolitan statistical areas in which there were 5,000 or more persons classified as of Spanish origin, language, or birthplace.

A Note on Language

Census statistics date back to 1790 and reflect the growth and change of the United States. Past census reports contain some terms that today’s readers may consider obsolete and inappropriate. As part of our goal to be open and transparent with the public, we are improving access to all Census Bureau original publications and statistics, which serve as a guide to the nation's history.
