1970 Census - Population: Residence in 1965 for Selected Areas

PC(S1)-53

This report presents revised data on residence in 1965 for the 25 standard metropolitan statistical areas (SMSAs) in the New England states and for census tracts in areas adjacent to 23 SMSAs outside New England. These data replace the comparable figures shown in the reports for the designated SMSAs in 1970 Population and Housing Series PHC( 1) Census Tracts.

For each New England SMSA, all tracts and component areas shown in tables P-2, P-5, and P-7 of the PHC( 1) report are reproduced here. For each SMSA outside New England, only the "adjacent tracts" shown in tables P-2, P-5, and P-7 of the PHC(1) report are reproduced here. The error which occurred in the original tabulation resulted in persons being incorrectly counted as living "In other part of the SMSA" in 1965, rather than "Outside this SMSA." All tracts shown in the PHC(1) reports for the New England SMSAs were potentially affected; outside New England, only the "adjacent tracts" were potentially affected. The present report includes all potentially affected tracts and component areas, whether or not revisions turned out to be required for the particular tract or component areas.

A Note on Language

Census statistics date back to 1790 and reflect the growth and change of the United States. Past census reports contain some terms that today’s readers may consider obsolete and inappropriate. As part of our goal to be open and transparent with the public, we are improving access to all Census Bureau original publications and statistics, which serve as a guide to the nation's history.
