This report presents statistics on the Negro population, cross-classified by various social and economic characteristics for the United States, regions, selected States, standard metropolitan statistical areas, and cities. Selected housing characteristics also are given. The data are based on the 1970 Census of Population and Housing.

The text consists of an introduction and Appendices A through E, which appear after the tables.

Content of the Tables

• Table 1 – Negro population classified by sex and urban-rural residence for the United States, regions, divisions, and States.
  
• Tables 2-10 – characteristics such as age, family relationship, marital status, school enrollment, employment status, occupation, income in 1969, and housing, for the United States, regions, and selected States by urban-rural residence.
  
• Tables 11-15 – social, economic, and housing characteristics for selected standard metropolitan statistical areas and cities.

Sample size. The statistics in this report are based on a sample adjusted to represent the total population. Most data are based on a 20-percent sample of the population; data on place of birth, school enrollment, residence in 1965, selected items on housing equipment, and number of automobiles available are based on a 15-percent sample.
