This report shows national and state statistics on various population and housing subjects in a format comparable with the presentation of these subjects in the 1970 Census PHC(1) series of census tract reports. The tables in this report thus provide a convenient means for users of the tract data to make comparative studies with national and state data on the same subjects.

The PHC(1) series contains separate reports for each of 238 standard metropolitan statistical areas in the United States. In those reports, as here, the population tables are numbered from P-1 to P-8 and the housing tables from H-1 to H-5. Tables P-1, H-1, and H-3 present data based on 100-percent tabulations; the other tables present data based on 15- and 20-percent sample tabulations.

Within each table of the present report, the first column of data relates to the United States as a whole. Successive columns show data for the individual states, arranged in region-division, rather than alphabetical, order. The final column in each table relates to New York City, as a convenience to users of the PHC(1) tract report for the New York area; that report shows individual county figures but not a city-wide total. For each table, the pages are numbered starting with "1" (e.g., P1-1 to P1-6, P2-1 to P2-6, etc.).
