HC(2)

This report presents cross-tabulations of housing and household characteristics from the 1970 Census of Population and Housing for the United States and regions, by metropolitan residence.

A series of standard tables is presented for each area shown in this report. Tables 1 to 8 present statistics for owner· occupied and renter-occupied units. Tables 9 and 10 present statistics for vacant units, separately for units for sale and for units for rent. Data for housing units with Negro head of household are presented in tables 11 to 18. The finding guide on page IV lists the characteristics covered in this report and shows the tables in which the various types of statistics appear.

The prefix letter "A" has been assigned to the tables for the United States and region totals. Within each of these areas, the prefix "B" has been assigned to the tables for the total of all SMSA's; prefix "C" to the total of all central cities of SMSA's; prefix "D" to the SMSA total not in central cities; and prefix "E" to the total of all areas outside SMSA's.

A Note on Language

Census statistics date back to 1790 and reflect the growth and change of the United States. Past census reports contain some terms that today’s readers may consider obsolete and inappropriate. As part of our goal to be open and transparent with the public, we are improving access to all Census Bureau original publications and statistics, which serve as a guide to the nation's history.
