1970 Census: Population, Negro Population in Selected Places and Selected Counties

PC(S1)-2

This report presents a compilation of statistics from the 1970 census on the distribution of the Negro population in selected places and selected counties across the Nation. Data are shown only for those places with a total population of at least 25,000 and a Negro population of 10,000 or more. Tables 1 and 2 contain statistics on the distribution of Negroes in those cities with a Negro population of 50,000 or more in 1970. The cities are listed according to the size of the Negro population in 1970. In table 3, 50 places with the highest proportion of Negroes in 1970 are presented in rank order. The 50 places were selected from table 4, which contains 1970 and 1960 statistics for 200 places that had at least 10,000 Negroes and a total population of 25,000 or more in 1970. In table 4, the places are ranked nationally and within each state by size of the 1970 Negro population. Data for counties are presented in tables 5 and 6, corresponding to that shown for cities in tables 1 and 3.

A Note on Language

Census statistics date back to 1790 and reflect the growth and change of the United States. Past census reports contain some terms that today’s readers may consider obsolete and inappropriate. As part of our goal to be open and transparent with the public, we are improving access to all Census Bureau original publications and statistics, which serve as a guide to the nation's history.
