This report presents data on poverty in the United States from 1959 to 1968. The detailed tables present data for each year from 1959 to 1968 separately for all poor, and two racial classifications: (1) white and (2) Negro and other races. Appendix tables contain data for 1966, 1967, and 1968 for Negroes alone. A description of the poor in 1968 and some analysis of the changes that occurred between 1959 and 1968 are offered. Although the primary focus of this report is on the United States as a whole, poverty data are also presented for metropolitan and nonmetropolitan areas. Selected data are shown separately for the central city and suburban portions of metropolitan areas. This is the first Census Bureau report to present such detailed poverty data based on the revised poverty definition adopted as the official standard in 1969. (See Definitions and Explanations, page 10, for a description of the revised definition.) Summary data for the United States based on the revised definition of poverty in addition to an explanation of the modifications made in the poverty definition were previously published in "Revision in Poverty Statistics, 1959 to 1968," Current Population Reports, Series P-23, No. 28.
