1960 Census: Population, Subject Reports, Income of the Elderly Population: Personal and Family Statistics for Persons 65 Years Old and Over

PC(2)-8B

The final reports of the 1960 Population Census are arranged in three volumes and a joint Population-Housing series of census tract reports. Volume II (Series PC(2) reports) are Subject Reports. Each report concentrates on a particular subject. Detailed information and cross-relationships are generally provided on a national and regional level. In a few reports, data for States or standard metropolitan statistical areas are also shown.

This report, designated as PC(2)-8B, contains data on the income of persons 65 years old and over and on the income of families in which the head or wife was 65 and over. Data are presented for the United States, each of the 50 States and the District of Columbia, and standard metropolitan statistical areas of 250,000 or more.

All statistics in this report are based on a 25-percent sample of the population. Information on age, sex, and family status was collected on a complete-count basis; but the data on these items shown in this report are based on persons in the 25-percent sample.

A Note on Language

Census statistics date back to 1790 and reflect the growth and change of the United States. Past census reports contain some terms that today’s readers may consider obsolete and inappropriate. As part of our goal to be open and transparent with the public, we are improving access to all Census Bureau original publications and statistics, which serve as a guide to the nation's history.
