The Bureau of the Census applies the general term “minor civil divisions” to the primary political units into which counties or their equivalents are divided. This special summary has been prepared because, in the six New England States, the towns and other minor civil divisions are of greater governmental significance than in most of the other States.
The table shows, for each minor civil division, the county in which it resides, and the population totals for 1960, 1950 and 1940.
The PDF to the right contains the 10-page report.
Census statistics date back to 1790 and reflect the growth and change of the United States. Past census reports contain some terms that today’s readers may consider obsolete and inappropriate. As part of our goal to be open and transparent with the public, we are improving access to all Census Bureau original publications and statistics, which serve as a guide to the nation's history.
