The average income of men and women rose slightly in 1957 in spite of the business downturn which started in the second half of the year, according to estimates released today by the Bureau of the Census, Department of Commerce. The average (median) income of men who received some income was estimated at $3,700, a gain of about $75, or 2 percent, over the previous year. This change, however, was considerably smaller than the average annual increase among men since World War II, and compared with a rise of $250 between 1955 and 1956. Among women with income, the average (median) income was $1,200 in 1957, a gain of about $50 over the 1956 average.
Census statistics date back to 1790 and reflect the growth and change of the United States. Past census reports contain some terms that today’s readers may consider obsolete and inappropriate. As part of our goal to be open and transparent with the public, we are improving access to all Census Bureau original publications and statistics, which serve as a guide to the nation's history.
