Current information on employment, unemployment, and related data are compiled each month from the Current Population Survey of the Bureau of the Census. This survey is conducted each month with a scientifically selected sample representing the noninstitutional civilian population. The major results are announced in the Combined Employment and Unemployment Release issued jointly by the Departments of Commerce and Labor. The joint release, issued as a press statement, presents not only information from the survey but also related data from the Department of Labor. Fuller details from the Current Population Survey are issued in the Bureau of the Census "The Monthly Report on the Labor Force," Current Population Reports, Series P-57.1 A description of the concepts and methods used in the preparation of these statistics follow.

Census statistics date back to 1790 and reflect the growth and change of the United States. Past census reports contain some terms that today’s readers may consider obsolete and inappropriate. As part of our goal to be open and transparent with the public, we are improving access to all Census Bureau original publications and statistics, which serve as a guide to the nation's history.
