This report is one of the series on wholesale distribution and is part of the Census of Distribution taken in 1930, covering the year 1929. To be included in this study, an establishment must make more than 50 percent of their sales at wholesale.
A wholesale establishment may take the form of a store which does not generally sell to the public; a wholesaling warehouse; on office; or part of an office, as when the office is shared with similar establishments. A separate report was required for each establishment, regardless of whether or not it was owned or operated as part of a larger business organization.
The major discussion is devoted to multiple types of operation by types of wholesalers and kind of business. Wholesale peddlers, as well as others who maintained no place of business, were not included in this census.
Detailed tables are presented for each major type of wholesaling: Brokers, cash-and-carry, commission merchants, drop shippers, exporters and importers, manufacturers’ agents, manufacturers’ sales branches, selling agents, wagon distributors, wholesale merchants, and all other types.
Census statistics date back to 1790 and reflect the growth and change of the United States. Past census reports contain some terms that today’s readers may consider obsolete and inappropriate. As part of our goal to be open and transparent with the public, we are improving access to all Census Bureau original publications and statistics, which serve as a guide to the nation's history.
