1930 Census of Distribution: Small City and Rural Trade Series. Analyzing the Small City and Rural Market Area

This report is one of the series on retail trade in the small city and rural area that represent one phase of the work of the first Census of Distribution taken in 1930, covering the year 1929. Small city and rural area comprises places of less that 10,000 population and open country. Approximately 65 million people, or slightly more that 50 percent of the U.S. population, live in such places in 1930.

There are three chapters:

  1. General analysis. Retail outlets and sales, suggestions for analytical study in market analysis, census of distribution data concerning merchandising problems
  2. Analysis of trade in six Nebraska counties. Population characteristics, agriculture, summary of retail sales and related economic data, and trade distribution in the six counties
  3. Data for additional States and counties.

A Note on Language

Census statistics date back to 1790 and reflect the growth and change of the United States. Past census reports contain some terms that today’s readers may consider obsolete and inappropriate. As part of our goal to be open and transparent with the public, we are improving access to all Census Bureau original publications and statistics, which serve as a guide to the nation's history.
