1930 Census of Distribution: Retail Distribution (Trade Series)

Apparel Retailing (Apparel, Clothing and Related Merchandise)

This report is the fifth of a series of special retail trade studies from the first complete Census of Distribution. It brings together much of the operating and expense data supplied by those retail stores engaged in selling apparel, furnishings, and accessories.

The four chapters are:

  1. Apparel-by whom sold
  2. Apparel stores and their operation
  3. Leading apparel competitors
  4. Sales by commodities


Detailed tables show stores and sales by States and geographic divisions and by size of city; operating expenses by kinds of business; credit sales; stores and sales by size of business and by types of operation; and approximate sales of men's and women's apparel by States and kinds of business.

Automobile Trades

(1934)

Distribution No. R-82

The term “Automobile Trades” is used to describe the various kinds of establishments engaged in supplying the motoring public with automobiles and other motor vehicles; with replacement parts and accessories; with satisfactory facilities for repairs and other service; and with necessary fuel and lubrication.

This report includes much of the operating and expense data reported by these trades which supply the needs of the motoring public.

The five chapters are:

  1. Automotive equipment-by whom sold;
  2. Automobiles and other motor vehicles;
  3. Accessory, tire and battery dealers-garages and repair shops;
  4. Filling stations;
  5. Sales by commodities.


Detailed tables show geographic distribution of the several classes of dealers, operating expenses, rental costs, sales-cash, credit, wholesale, and retail.

Drug Retailing

This report is one of a series of special trade studies prepared from data assembled in the first nation-wide Census of Distribution.  It brings together, in one bulletin, much of the available information on the operation of drug stores and in addition is supplemented by certain pertinent facts about competing stores.

The six chapters are:

  1. Drug stores and their operation;
  2. Commodities sold by drug stores;
  3. Operating expenses of competing stores compared;
  4. Related commodities;
  5. Drug stores as a market;
  6. All drug stores located in the Chicago-Milwaukee area analyzed by size of business and by size of city.

Food Retailing

This report is one of a series of special trade studies prepared from data assembled in the first Nation-wide census of distribution.  It brings together, in one bulletin, much of the available information on the operation of stores distributing foods.

Four chapters and 39 detailed tables present text and data showing food stores according to operation, kinds and number, sales, operating expenses, employment, pay roll, wage cost, sales by city size and by size of store, sales by geographic divisions, credit business; restaurants according to operation, number and sales, receipts from sales of meals, operating expenses; food sales by commodities, and commodity sales by kinds of stores; and buyer contacts, and number of food buyers by geographic areas. Also Appendix-Definitions of classifications used in this report.

Shoe Retailing

This report is one of a series of special trade studies prepared from data assembled in the first Nation-wide census of distribution.  It brings together, in one bulletin, much of the available information on the operation of stores distributing shoes.

The three chapters are:

  1. Shoe stores and their operation;
  2. The sale of related commodities in shoe stores;
  3. Marketing shoes through retailers.


Detailed tables show geographic distribution of stores and sales by States and divisions, shoe stores by size of business, operating expenses, commodities sold, and production, imports and exports of footwear.
