Industries include anthracite and bituminous-coal mining; the mining of gold, silver, copper, lead, and zinc; iron-ore mining; stone quarrying; the production of sand and gravel; phosphate-rock mining; clay mining; gypsum mining; and the mining of miscellaneous minerals.
The tables for each State, with exception of Delaware, Mississippi and the District of Columbia for which no statistics are reported, summarize the data for all industries, describe the character of organization of selected industries, the size of enterprises as measured by number of wage earners, prevailing hours of labor per week for wage earners in selected industries, enterprises classified according to total rating of power equipment, wage earners by months in selected industries and include detailed statistics for selected industries showing persons engaged in industry, principal expenses, value of products, prime movers, and fuel and electric energy consumed.
The industry reports include an introduction, a summary of the principal statistics for the United States and statistics showing the progress of the industry, geographic distribution, scale of operation, type of ownership, distribution of sales, power, time in operation, persons engaged, and general tables.
The reports for phosphate rock, clay, gypsum, and miscellaneous mineral industries are covered by summary tables only.
Census statistics date back to 1790 and reflect the growth and change of the United States. Past census reports contain some terms that today’s readers may consider obsolete and inappropriate. As part of our goal to be open and transparent with the public, we are improving access to all Census Bureau original publications and statistics, which serve as a guide to the nation's history.
