The results from the census of unemployment, taken in 1930, were first published in a series of State bulletins. These bulletins, together with a summary bulletin covering the entire U.S., are assembled to make this volume, the first of two.
Volume I shows the number unemployed in the U.S. by geographic divisions and States, counties, etc., according to classes of unemployment by sex, color, and nativity, period of and reason for idleness, and industry groups.
Census statistics date back to 1790 and reflect the growth and change of the United States. Past census reports contain some terms that today’s readers may consider obsolete and inappropriate. As part of our goal to be open and transparent with the public, we are improving access to all Census Bureau original publications and statistics, which serve as a guide to the nation's history.
