1920 Census: Volume 9. Manufactures, 1919, Reports for States, with Statistics for Principal Cities

This is the ninth volume of the 11 final reports of the Fourteenth Census, taken in the year 1920. The statistics and other materials found in these volumes are based upon data originally issued as advance bulletins for population, agriculture, irrigation, drainage, manufactures, and mines and quarries.

Volume IX, the second of three volumes on Manufactures, contains a separate report on the manufacturers of each state and Alaska, Hawaii, and Porto Rico. Some of the data collected in 1920 are for the reference year 1919. The volume presents stats on the following:

  • principal industries ranked by value of products, 1919
  • persons engaged in manufacturing industries, 1919, 1914, and 1909
  • average number of wage earners for selected industries by sex and age, for the State and for cities with more than 10,000 inhabitants
  • wage earners, by months, and by prevailing hours of labor per week
  • size of establishments by average number of wage earners and value of products
  • character of ownership, etc.

A Note on Language

Census statistics date back to 1790 and reflect the growth and change of the United States. Past census reports contain some terms that today’s readers may consider obsolete and inappropriate. As part of our goal to be open and transparent with the public, we are improving access to all Census Bureau original publications and statistics, which serve as a guide to the nation's history.
