1920 Census: Volume 3. Population, Composition and Characteristics of the Population by States

This is the third volume of the 11 final reports of the Fourteenth Census, taken in the year 1920. The statistics and other materials found in these volumes are based upon data originally issued as advance bulletins for population, agriculture, irrigation, drainage, manufactures, and mines and quarries.

Volume III, Population, contains statistics for the U.S., large cities, the states, counties, all places having 2,500 inhabitants or more, and the outlying possessions of Alaska, Hawaii, Porto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, and Panama Canal Zone. The volume presents for each state as a whole, and for its counties and cities, statistics as to color or race, nativity, parentage, sex, age, school attendance, illiteracy, and dwellings and families, and, for the foreign-born white population, citizenship and country of birth.

A Note on Language

Census statistics date back to 1790 and reflect the growth and change of the United States. Past census reports contain some terms that today’s readers may consider obsolete and inappropriate. As part of our goal to be open and transparent with the public, we are improving access to all Census Bureau original publications and statistics, which serve as a guide to the nation's history.
