This special report on mines and quarries also covers petroleum and natural-gas wells for the year ending December 31, 1902. The date of enumeration was changed by Congress on March 6, 1902 from the year of the decennial census – years ending in zero – to after the completion of schedules relating to the products of agriculture, manufacturing and mechanical establishments counted by the 1900 Census.
Included are statistics on mines and quarries by states and territories, reports on separate minerals, diagrams and illustrations.
Census statistics date back to 1790 and reflect the growth and change of the United States. Past census reports contain some terms that today’s readers may consider obsolete and inappropriate. As part of our goal to be open and transparent with the public, we are improving access to all Census Bureau original publications and statistics, which serve as a guide to the nation's history.
