This special report on employees and wages is designed to show the actual rates of wages and amounts earned for specific periods by the employees in typical manufacturing establishments in various lines of industry, and in different sections of the U.S.
These statistics are based on transcripts from the pay rolls of representative establishments in the leading lines of industry throughout the U.S. for corresponding months of the years 1890 and 1900.
Census statistics date back to 1790 and reflect the growth and change of the United States. Past census reports contain some terms that today’s readers may consider obsolete and inappropriate. As part of our goal to be open and transparent with the public, we are improving access to all Census Bureau original publications and statistics, which serve as a guide to the nation's history.
