The History and Growth of the United States Census

Written by:
Document No. 194

This report traces growth of census inquiry from the first enumeration, in 1790 to the eleventh, in 1890.

The present purpose to consider, first, the purely historical features of the several censuses, as to methods of enumeration, general scope of the inquiries and printed results, and the cost of the work, and to then show the inception and growth of the inquiries concerning each of the various subjects of investigation.

A Note on Language

Census statistics date back to 1790 and reflect the growth and change of the United States. Past census reports contain some terms that today’s readers may consider obsolete and inappropriate. As part of our goal to be open and transparent with the public, we are improving access to all Census Bureau original publications and statistics, which serve as a guide to the nation's history.
