This January 1897 copy of The Vermonter magazine includes an article on internal migration using recently released data from the 1890 Census. The 1890 Census was the first census to use Herman Hollerith's electric tabulating machines to compile the results.
The article noted that of the 422,359 people who listed Vermont as their birthplace, 40.91 percent (172,769) lived in another state at the time of the 1890 Census—the highest percentage in the nation. Birthplace data showed that of Vermont's 332,422 residents, 37,795 (11.37%) were born in another state.
