Tallies of American Indian Areas, Alaska Native Areas and Hawaiian Home Lands by State

Several abbreviations or acronyms are used in this table. The geographic entities referenced by these terms are:

  • AIRs: American Indian reservations
  • SDAISAs: State designated American Indian statistical areas
  • TDSAs: Tribal designated statistical areas
  • OTSAs: Oklahoma tribal statistical areas
  • ANVSAs: Alaska Native Village statistical areas
  • ANRCs: Alaska Native regional corporations
  • HHLs: Hawaiian home lands

Note: None of these entities exist in Puerto Rico or the Island Areas, so this table does not include those entities in the list of states and statistically equivalent entities.

Notes:

Federal American Indian reservations, off-reservation trust lands, tribal subdivisions, and TDSAs can cross state boundaries. Thus, summing the total number of these entities by state will result in a total higher than the number of entities within the United States. The "Total United States" count reflects the actual total of these American Indian area entities for the United States.

The tally for the number of Federal AIRs include four joint use areas related to federal reservations. A joint use area is territory claimed by two or more tribes.

The tally for the number of off-reservation trust lands include six federal tribes with only off-reservation trust land.

Notes:

The tallies for the number of "counties" include statistically equivalent entities such as the boroughs, census areas, city and boroughs, and municipality in Alaska; parishes in Louisiana; independent cities in Maryland, Missouri, Nevada, and Virginia; The District of Columbia; municipios in Puerto Rico; islands in the U.S. Virgin Islands; and a variety of entities in the Pacific Island Areas.

The MCD totals do not include "MCDs" with a code equal to "00000." The Census Bureau assigns this default county subdivision code in some coastal and Great Lakes water where county subdivisions do not extend into the Great Lakes or out to the coastal three-mile limit.

Tallies of Geographic Entities by County

The Census Bureau is providing tallies of the number of geographic entities within county and statistically equivalent entity. The geographic entities for which we are providing tallies include county subdivisions (minor civil divisions, census county divisions, unorganized territories, and census subareas), places (consolidated cities, incorporated places, and census designated places), census tracts, block groups, blocks, voting districts, state legislative districts (upper and lower chambers), traffic analysis zones, school districts, and ZIP Code ® tabulation areas (ZCTAs TM).

These geographic entity tallies are provided in a comma-delimited ASCII text file format, one file per state and statistical equivalent. The last record in each state file includes a summary total of the counts for each Census 2000 geographic entity within the state. Note that some geographic entities including places, voting districts, state legislative districts, school districts, and ZCTAs can cross county boundaries. ZCTAs can cross state boundaries. Thus summing the total number of these entities by county will result in a total higher than the number of entities within the state.

Notes:

Some states did not participate in Phase 2 (the Voting District Project) of the Census 2000 Redistricting Data Program or did not submit VTD boundaries or codes. An "NA" appears in the VTD column in these states. The tallies for the number of VTDs include VTD code "ZZZZZZ"; this code identifies areas in the state where no VTDs were defined, such as bodies of water. The VTD total for Arizona includes VTDs for only eight counties; seven counties in Arizona did not submit VTDs to the Census Bureau.

Some states did not participate in Phase 2 (the Voting District Project) of the Census 2000 Redistricting Data Program or did not submit state legislative district (SLD) boundaries or codes. An "NA" appears in the SLDU or SLDL columns in these states. The tallies for the number of SLDs include SLD code "ZZZ"; this code identifies areas in the state where no SLDs were defined, such as bodies of water. Nebraska has a "0" total for SLDLs because it has a unicameral legislature.

In Hawaii, the elementary and secondary school district counts include high school service areas (recorded as secondary school districts) and groupings of these areas into administrative districts (recorded as elementary school districts). Community school districts are recorded as elementary school districts in New York city. In Massachusetts, South Carolina, and Tennessee, some unified school districts also serve as secondary school districts in areas where there are elementary school districts. In these situations the Census Bureau could not use the same school district code to identify school districts serving different grade ranges and assigned two separate codes; a unified school district code and a separate "false" secondary school district code. The school district counts in Massachusetts, South Carolina, and Tennessee include these false school district codes.

Some states did not participate in the Census 2000 TAZ program. An "NA" appears in the TAZ column in these states. The tallies for the number of TAZs include TAZ code "ZZZZZZ"; this code identifies areas in the state where no TAZs were defined. Some states did not submit TAZ boundaries or codes for all counties.

ZCTAs can cross state boundaries. Thus, summing the total number of 3-digit or 5-digit ZCTAs by state will result in a total higher than the number of ZCTAs within the United States or the United States and Puerto Rico. The total counts in this table reflect the actual number of ZCTAs.
