The Census Bureau produces economic data for ZIP Codes as defined by the United States Postal Service.
For demographic and housing data from the decennial census or American Community Survey (ACS), the Census Bureau uses generalized representations of ZIP Codes through a geography called ZIP Code Tabulation Areas (ZCTAs). If you would like to learn more about this type of geography and how they differ from the mail delivery routes that ZIP codes are based on, check out this geography webpage and short video.
How to Select ZIP Code Tabulation Areas (ZCTAs) to Get Demographic Data
Click the “ZIP Code Tabulation Area” option using the geography filters on data.census.gov. This provides data through Summary Level 860 from the decennial census and American Community Survey.
