X-13-Graph

X-13-Graph is a program developed at the Census Bureau to provide graphical diagnostics for the Bureau's X-13ARIMA-SEATS seasonal adjustment program. The original program was developed as a SAS Macro program; there is also a Java implementation of the software.

X-13-Graph allows the user to:

  • Select from 20 types of graphs
  • Compare different X-13ARIMA-SEATS (or X-12-ARIMA) adjustments
  • Choose options for the graphs, such as starting and ending dates, scale, and colors
  • Save the graphs in a variety of formats

Our goal in creating X-13-Graph was to provide specific types of time series graphs in a package that would be easy for everyone to use. There are three versions of the program available for download:

  1. X-13-Graph Java is an interactive implementation coded entirely in Java. Graphs are created one at a time within the graphical user interface.
  2. X-13-Graph Batch is a batch version programmed in and run in the SAS® System, though no previous SAS experience is required from the user. Users can set up lists of series and graph types and create all requested graphs with one call.
  3. The X-13-Graph Batch Windows Interface runs the batch version of the program. The Windows interface can create all necessary files, set the graph options, and run the SAS program.

Documentation and examples are available for X-13-Graph Java, X-13-Graph Batch, and the X-13-Graph Batch Windows interface.

SAS software is registered trademark of the SAS Institute Inc. in the USA and other countries. ® indicates USA registration.

Changes from the previous version

This release includes a new option to specify a label for the y-axis, changes the default y-axis range for ACF graphs to -1 to 1, and fixes some minor bugs.

Distribution files for the latest version of X-13-Graph and the X-13-Graph Windows Interface can be found below. Installation instructions can also be found below.

X-13-Graph Batch Windows Interface, Version 3.1: A compressed file which contains a subdirectory named x13gbi with the setup files needed to install SAS program X-13-Graph Batch, Version 3.1 for SAS 9, and a Windows interface to run the program.

Last update: July 11, 2022

X-13-Graph Batch for PC, Version 3.1 for SAS 9: A compressed file which contains a subdirectory named "x13gbat" with the SAS program X-13-Graph Batch (x13gbat.sas), its documentation (x13gbat.pdf), and a directory "appl" containing three SAS files.

X-13-Graph Requirements

The X-13-Graph Batch program requires SAS/GRAPH® and SAS Version 8 or 9; Windows; and X-13ARIMA-SEATS (or Version 0.2.8 or later of X-12-ARIMA).

You must run X-13ARIMA-SEATS in graphics mode to take advantage of X-13-Graph. For more information on running in graphics mode, see the X-13ARIMA-SEATS Reference Manual or the "Getting Started with X-12-ARIMA Input Files (PC)" paper.

X-13-Graph Java Requirements

X-13-Graph requires Java Version 6.0 or higher to run. It creates graphs from graphics files created using X-13ARIMA-SEATS, X-12-ARIMA Version 0.3, or higher.

You must run X-13ARIMA-SEATS (or X-12-ARIMA) in graphics mode to take advantage of X-13-Graph. For more information on running in graphics mode, see the X-13ARIMA-SEATS Reference Manual or the Getting Started with X-13ARIMA-SEATS Input Files paper.

Installing the Batch Version of X-13-Graph

Before you can use X-13-Graph, you must copy it to your computer:

  1. Copy the zip file x13gbat_V3.0.zip to the C drive of your computer.
  2. Double Click on x13gbat_V3.0.zip in Windows® Explorer to uncompress the files. The files will be stored in the c:\x13graph subdirectory.

X-13-Graph Batch consists of a SAS program, a subdirectory with two SAS files, and an images subdirectory, as well as the program documentation. After uncompressing x13gbat_V3.0.zip, the following files should be in the c:\x13graph directory:

x13gbat.sas
x13gbat.htm

The c:\x13graph\appl directory should contain the following files:

Namelist.sas7bdat
Templt.sas7bcat

There should also be a directory c:\x13graph\images containing examples of the graphs that can be created.

The two SAS files in the appl subdirectory must be in that directory for the program to run. The SAS program x13gbat.sas can be stored in any directory.

Installing the X-13-Graph Batch Windows Interface

Users with older versions of Windows may need to install the Microsoft .NET Framework Version 4.6 to use the interface. If it is not found on your computer, you will be prompted to download and install it when you attempt to install the interface.

To install the program, first unzip the file x13gbi_V3.0.zip to your computer. This zip folder has a directory (x13gbi) which contains two files, the program executable x13GraphBatch.exe and its configuration file, x13GraphBatch.exe.config, as well as a subdirectory appl containing the necessary data sets and catalogs for the X-13-Graph SAS program to run. To start the program, double click on x13GraphBatch.exe.

Installing X-13-Graph Java

  • Copy the zip file x13graphjava_V3.0.zip to the C drive of your computer.
  • Uncompress the file. X-13-Graph Java will be stored in a x13GraphJava subdirectory.

Now you are ready to run the program. Open (double click on) the file X13GraphJava.jar to start the program. If your computer cannot open executable jar files directly, then at the command prompt, enter

java -jar fullpath /X13GraphJava.jar
