Trade by Industry and Product Statistics (TIPS)

Note (posted March 20, 2025): The Census Bureau has identified an error in the experimental Trade by Industry and Product Statistics (TIPS) tables. The tables have been temporarily removed and will be replaced when updated versions are available.

The Trade by Industry and Product Statistics (TIPS) is an experimental data product that provides granular-level information about the U.S. industries that import and export by type of product. This project is an expansion of another international trade-based data product: the “Profile of U.S. Importing and Exporting Companies,” (the Profile) which provides statistics about the U.S. businesses that import and export goods. The Profile links international trade data to industry classification codes and employment size information derived from the Census Bureau's Business Register, the list of all businesses operating within the United States.

While the Profile provides valuable information about the characteristics of companies engaged in international trade, it does not include data about the types of goods exported or imported. This is a key piece of information stakeholders can use to understand the supply chain more completely. The TIPS data address this data gap by combining detailed information about the internationally traded goods with the industry-level information from the Business Register. The resulting experimental data product will enable stakeholders to know which industries are importing and exporting certain products.
