Beginning with the Vintage 2021 estimates series, the base population (or starting point) for the post-2020 population estimates produced by the U.S. Census Bureau has been created by integrating several sources of data, rather than relying strictly on the results of the latest decennial census. Although this "blended base" was adopted in response to data availability issues stemming from the impact of COVID-19 on 2020 Census operations and other complicating factors, it has also introduced the potential for further methodological developments. This work is now the responsibility of the Base Evaluation and Research Team (BERT), a group comprised of subject-matter experts from across the Bureau tasked with making recommendations about the incorporation of data from the 2020 Census and other sources into the base population. We invite you to join us to learn more about how the blended base and other elements of the estimates methodology have been updated for the forthcoming Vintage 2023 estimates series, including changes resulting from BERT's research.
