We are transforming our approach to creating statistical data products. For centuries statistical agencies mainly relied on surveys to meet the nation’s data needs. Today’s technology allows us to use a wide variety of survey, administrative, and other data--often data we have already collected. This allows us to respond more effectively to the rapidly evolving needs of the nation.
The four key innovation areas include:
- Data Ingest and Collection for the Enterprise (DICE) simplifies data collection
- The Frames Program enables us to use our data in more innovative ways
- The Enterprise Data Lake (EDL) centralizes data management and processing, enabling more efficient access and use of our data

Why modernize the Census Bureau Business Ecosystem?
- Increased Demand for Information: There is an increased demand for timely statistics. The Census Bureau’s traditional approach generally resulted in a lag between data collection and release to the public. That is no longer acceptable in our rapidly changing society. Policy makers, scholars, business owners, individuals and other data users need more timely, accurate, granular, and customizable information about people, places, and the economy than ever before.
- Data Collection Challenges: Survey respondents are increasingly burdened by the length and number of surveys seeking their information. Concerns about intrusiveness have added to their reluctance to respond. The result is declining overall response rates, which creates an even greater strain on the Census Bureau’s traditional survey-focused approach.
- New Data Sources and Technology: With advances in technology, the Census Bureau can take advantage of an unprecedented number of high quality and more timely data sources to deliver new statistical products.
