Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) Voucher Program Evaluations

Program Objective

HUD has made an increasing number of investments into large-scale randomized controlled trials (RCT) over the past several decades. Researchers are then able to study these RCTs, often focusing on the long-term effects of low income and/or homelessness housing voucher programs.

Collaboration Highlights

Through a data sharing agreement with Census, the matching of additional administrative data sources to HUD’s housing demonstration data allows for the exploration of targeted research questions and valuable program insights. Data from HUD’s Moving to Opportunity for Fair Housing (MTO) study and the Family Options Study (FOS) are of particular interest to Census Bureau and external researchers. Currently, the Census Bureau is securely housing the data, managing researcher access, and handling the disclosure review of researcher results.
