The responsibility for the development and maintenance of open government policies, procedures, and guidance is handled through the Office of Privacy and Open Government at the Department of Commerce (the Department). The Census Bureau’s Open Government Office, carries out the operations of the Department.

- January 21, 2009 – Memorandum on Transparency and Open Government
- December 8, 2009 – Office of Management and Budget (OMB) issued M-10-06, the Open Government Directive
- May 9, 2013 -- M-13-13 Open Data Policy – Managing Information as an Asset
