Privacy Act of 1974 (December 31, 1974) (P.L. 93-579)

Establishes a Federal Privacy Board. Statistical data, such as census records, are explicitly exempted from the provisions of the privacy act.

An Act of December 23, 1975 (P.L. 94-171)

Provides for the transmittal of population data to the states and localities within one year of the decennial census date for use in redrawing congressional and other legislative districts.

Americans of Spanish Origins Social Statistics Act (June 16, 1976) (P.L. 94-311)

Joint Resolution that the Department of Commerce begin to publish social statistics about persons of Hispanic origin.

Title 13—Census (October 17, 1976) (P.L. 94-521)

Amendments to Title 13, the law governing the statistical activities of the Census Bureau.

An Act of October 5, 1978 (P.L. 95-416)

Provides for the transfer of census returns to the National Archives. Mandates that those returns are kept confidential until 72 years after the census to which they pertain.

An Act Making Appropriations for the Department of Commerce and other agencies (November 28, 1983) (P.L. 98-166)

Along with providing appropriations for fiscal year 1983, this law also authorizes the Census Bureau to share addresses with the United States Postal Service to improve its address lists.
