About Tribal Affairs

The Census Bureau collects data for the American Indian and Alaska Native (AIAN) population and publishes AIAN specific counts, estimates, and statistics at many geographic levels. The Tribal Resource (AIAN) website highlights the Census Bureau's relationship with tribal governments and provides important AIAN and tribal resources.

Within the Intergovernmental Affairs Office, the Tribal Affairs Liaison works directly with tribal governments on matters of policy, legislative concerns and correspondence at the Census Bureau Director's level to provide updates on Census Bureau products, programs, and initiatives.

In order to strengthen the government-to-government relationship between the Census Bureau and tribal governments and to facilitate work with American Indian and Alaska Native organizations, the Census Bureau has adopted the following policies and handbook:

Consultation

The Tribal Affairs Liaison is designated to coordinate the implementation of Executive Order 13175 on Consultation and Coordination with Indian Tribal Governments.

The Tribal Affairs Liaison will provide guidance and support to Census Bureau directorates, divisions, branch offices, and regional offices and will help identify issues requiring consultation.
