2013 Annual Retail Trade Survey

Summary of Changes

The following changes were made with the release of the 2013 ARTS estimates:

  • ARTS estimates were revised to reflect historical corrections to current sample data. Corrections are made to replace previously reported data with more accurate data received at a later date or to replace imputed data with reported data obtained from the company. For more information, refer to the Benchmarking section of the Annual Methodology link located below:

  • ARTS estimates were revised to reflect benchmarking to preliminary results of the 2012 Economic Census. Previously, estimates were benchmarked to results of the 2007 Economic Census. For more information, refer to the Benchmarking section of the Annual Methodology link located at: http://www.census.gov/retail/arts/how_surveys_are_collected.html
  • Detailed expense estimates for 2012, collected as part of the Business Expenses Supplement (BES) to the 2012 ARTS, and corresponding measures of sampling variability were revised to reflect benchmarking to preliminary results of the 2012 Economic Census.
  • Sales for NAICS 443112 (Radio, Television, and Other Electronics Stores) and aggregate industry levels to which NAICS 443112 contributes were revised back to 2003. The list of affected aggregate industry levels are:
    • Retail and food services, total
    • Total (excl. motor vehicle and parts dealers)
    • Retail sales, total
    • Retail sales, total (excl. motor vehicle and parts dealers)
    • GAFO
    • NAICS 443 (Electronics and appliance stores)
    • NAICS 4431 (Electronics and appliance stores)

  • The publication table for ARTS sales was expanded to include additional industry estimates for NAICS 44613 (Optical Goods Stores). Estimates for this additional level are presented back to the beginning of the NAICS time series (1992 - 2013).
  • The publication table for Accommodation and Food Services sales was expanded to include additional industry estimates for NAICS 72111 (Hotels (except Casino Hotels) and Motels), 72112 (Casino Hotels) and 72119 (Other Traveler Accommodation). Estimates for these additional levels are presented back to the beginning of the NAICS time series (1992 - 2013).
  • All data tables displaying a time series have been reformatted to display data in descending order from left to right beginning with the most recent data year. Previously data tables displaying a time series had been displayed in ascending order from left to right beginning with the oldest available year.
