2001 Panel Wave 4 Work Schedule Topical Module User Note 2

Statement of the Problem:

The edited variables for the Work Schedule module whose names end with the suffix "2" (for example, EWSHRS2, EWSDY2, etc.), relate to the work schedule for the person's second job or business  held in reference month 4: that is, to a job or business held in addition to the job or business whose work schedule is described by edited variables, such as EWSHRS1, whose names end with the suffix "1". The variables with suffix "1" are known as "job 1" variables; those with suffix "2" are called "job 2" variables.

The universe for the "job 2" variables is described in the documentation as being restricted to persons for whom EWSEMPCT>1 (meaning that the person had 2 or more employers during a typical week). However, some persons with EWSEMPCT=1 (meaning that the person had only one employer during a typical week) have in-universe values for these variables. These persons had jobs or businesses in addition to the one related to the "job 1" variables, but they did not hold the "job 2" job/business during the same week as the "job 1" job/business.

Resolution of the Problem:

The user who wants to restrict the use of the job 2 variables to persons for whom  EWSEMPCT>1 must use EWSEMPCT>1 as a subsetting requirement.
