The purpose of the Building Permits Survey (BPS) is to provide national, state, and local statistics on new privately-owned residential construction. The United States Code, Title 13, authorizes this survey, provides for voluntary responses, and provides an exception to confidentiality for public records. Data are available monthly, year-to-date, and annually at the national, state, CBSA (formerly MSA), county and place levels.
5/14/26 - Final annual estimates for 2025 of housing units authorized by building permits for the U.S. and by Census Region, Census Division, state, core based statistical area, county, permit-issuing place, and island areas are now available. Revised monthly estimates for the U.S. and Census Regions for the prior year which have been benchmarked to the final annual totals are also released. In addition, the following changes have been made with this release:
The tables "Annual History by State" and "Annual History by State and Structure Type" have been replaced by a single consolidated table and updated to the latest excel format. The new table is named "Annual History by State and Territory"
Data for American Samoa has been added for the first time in the "Annual History by State and Territory" excel file and the "Island Areas" ASCII file
