Birth Cohorts Geographic Mobility Report

Press Release Number: CB25-TPS.31

MAY 6, 2025 — The U.S. Census Bureau today released a new report that examines geographic mobility in the United States by birth cohorts also known as generations based on 2005 to 2023 American Community Survey (ACS) 1-year estimates.

Geographic mobility refers to the movement of people within and across geographic boundaries. Birth cohorts are groups of people born during a specific time frame who pass through life together. The report shows how geographic mobility varies by birth cohorts. For example, the Millennial Generation had the highest geographic mobility of all birth cohorts across most years.

The report includes six birth cohorts:

  1. The Silent Generation (born 1928 to 1945).
  2. Baby Boomers (born 1946 to 1964).
  3. Generation X (born 1965 to 1980).
  4. Millennials (born 1981 to 1996).
  5. Generation Z (born 1997 to 2012).
  6. Generation Alpha (born in/after 2013).

The Census Bureau collects, produces and publishes a range of statistics on geographic mobility and migration using multiple data sources. More information about these data sources and estimates is available on our Migration/Geographic Mobility webpage.
