For Immediate Release: Wednesday, April 03, 2013

Computerworld Honors Census Bureau for Open Data API

Press Release Number CB13-TPS.37

Computerworld has named the U.S. Census Bureau as a 2013 Honors Laureate for the development of its open data API, an application programming interface that allows developers to take data sets and reuse them to create online and mobile apps. The magazine recognizes the Census Bureau for its "visionary applications of information technology promoting positive social, economic and educational change."

"Technology continues to play a pivotal role in transforming how business and society functions," said John Amato, vice president and publisher of Computerworld. "These projects demonstrate how IT can advance an organization's ability to compete, innovate, communicate and prosper."

The Census Bureau implemented the open data API in July 2012. It has incorporated continuous updates and enhancements as suggested by developers.

"The Census Bureau open data API is considered a notable advancement that could be adopted by or tailored for other organizations, especially smaller federal agencies that may not have the resources or funding to establish the necessary infrastructure to fully support the potential users of their data," said Avi Bender, the Census Bureau's chief technology officer. "The open data API is an integral part of the Census Bureau's response to the comprehensive federal Digital Government Strategy, of providing data and services that are available 'anywhere, anytime, on any device.'"

The Honors Laureates will be featured in the June 3 edition of Computerworld.
