Based on input from federal agencies, the Census Bureau identified topics on the American Community Survey (ACS) that may require changes or additions. To evaluate these potential changes, new or modified questions are pretested using cognitive testing methods. As part of the 2022 ACS Content Test, RTI International and Research Support Services Inc. (RSS) conducted cognitive testing of potential questions related to the following topics for the Census Bureau:

  • Household Roster
  • Septic Systems
  • Electric Vehicles
  • Home Heating Fuel
  • Solar Panels
  • Condominium and Homeowners Assocation Fees
  • Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)
  • Educational Attainment
  • Health Insurance Coverage
  • Disability
  • Means of Transportation to Work
  • Labor Force (Weeks Worked)
  • Income

For Round 3 of cognitive testing, RTI and RSS conducted 29 cognitive interviews in English with individual currently or recently in group quarters facilities and 60 cognitive interviews in Spanish with individuals in Puerto Rico.
