Appendix C: Description of Detailed Tables

C.1 Introduction

Appendix C includes three sets of detailed tables. These sets include

(1) tables showing the reporting of race and Hispanic origin for pairs of panels,

(2) tables showing details of reporting more than one race for all panels, and

(3) tables showing illustrative approaches to racial classification for pairs of panels.

C.1.1 Tables Showing the Reporting of Race and Hispanic Origin for Pairs of Panels

The 106 tables in this set show percent distributions of responses by race and Hispanic origin for 11 pairs of panels. The panel comparisons are identified by two letters and are listed below with the first digits of their table numbers.

A and B           Table 1-                               D and B           Table 7-
A and C           Table 2-                               E and F           Table 8-
A and H           Table 3-                               B and E           Table 9-
B and C           Table 4-                               C and F           Table 10-
B and H           Table 5-                               B and G           Table 11-
C and H           Table 6-

In each pair of panel comparisons, the second panel represents a variation in the questionnaire from the first panel. In all cases except D (race question first) and B (Hispanic origin question first), the resulting pair of panels is shown in alphabetical order.

The second digit in each table number represents the targeted sample, as follows.

        White ethnic targeted sample       1
    Black targeted sample       2
    American Indian targeted sample       3
    Alaska Native targeted sample       3.1
Asian and Pacific Islander targeted sample       4
    Hispanic targeted sample       5

The 5 targeted samples included in all 11 panel comparisons were given numbers 1 through 5. The Alaska Native targeted sample, which is included in just 2 of the 11 panel comparisons (A and B, and D and B), was given the number 3.1 so that data for it are presented following data for the American Indian targeted sample.

The comparisons of Panels B and G are to show the effects of differences in terminology for the Asian and Pacific Islander targeted sample and for the American Indian targeted sample. Thus the comparisons of Panels B and G are limited to these two targeted samples.

The letters included in each table number represent the classification of the data by race (R) or by Hispanic origin (H). In some panel comparisons for the Asian and Pacific Islander targeted sample, detailed race categories are included. In some panel comparisons for the Hispanic targeted sample, Hispanic subgroups are included.

The resulting table numbers thus indicate the panel comparison, the targeted sample, and the classification of the data by race or Hispanic origin. Two examples follow. Table 1-2R shows data for Panel A and Panel B for the Black targeted sample, with the data classified by race. Table 10-5H shows data for Panel C and Panel F for the Hispanic targeted sample, with the data classified by Hispanic origin.

C.1.2 Tables Showing Details of Reporting More Than One Race for All Panels

The six tables in this set are designated with the letter "R" for reporting more than one race and are numbered R-1 through R-6. As described in Section 1.3, reporting more than one race is a general term that includes three components representing the three different ways that respondents reported more than one race. These way of reporting (and the panels in which they occur) are listed below:

  • multiracial category (Panels B, D, E, and G), where the multiracial category has its own response box and respondents were instructed to "mark one;"
  • multiple race (Panels C, F, and H), where there is not a separate multiracial category and respondents were instructed to "mark one or more" (Panels C and F) or to "mark all that apply" (Panel H);
  • unrequested multiple response (Panels A, B, D, E, and G), where respondents were instructed to mark one box (whether or not there was a multiracial category), but where respondents nevertheless marked more than one box.

These tables show the percent reporting more than one race divided into several specific combinations of races for each panel in each targeted sample. For example, Table R-2 for the Black targeted sample shows the percent reporting more than one race divided into Black and White, Black and American Indian and Alaska Native, Black and Asian and Pacific Islander, and Black and Hispanic (for Panels E and F only, where the data are for race or origin). These pairs are followed by other combinations of reporting more than one race.

C.1.3 Tables Showing Illustrative Approaches to Racial Classification for Pairs of Panels

The 32 tables in this set are designated with the letter "I" for illustrative approaches to racial classification and are numbered from I-1 to I-32. Using the illustrative approaches described below, these tables show the percent of responses classified as White in the White ethnic targeted sample, as Black in the Black targeted sample, as American Indian and Alaska Native in the American Indian targeted sample, as American Indian and Alaska Native in the Alaska Native targeted sample, as Asian and Pacific Islander in the Asian and Pacific Islander targeted sample, and as Hispanic in the Hispanic targeted sample. See Section 1.3.2 for more information on the illustrative approaches to racial classification.

Under percent of responses, three data lines are shown. The first data line represents the "single race" approach and shows the percent reporting only the specified race or origin. These estimates appear also in the first set of detailed tables, which show the reporting of race and Hispanic origin.

The second data line under percent of responses shows the percent reporting the specified race or origin consistent with the historical series approach important to data users, including federal agencies that use data on race and ethnicity to monitor and enforce civil rights legislation. This approach involves classifying some responses as White, Black, American Indian or Alaska Native (AIAN), Asian or Pacific Islander (API), or (only in Panels E and F) Hispanic where more than one race or ethnicity was reported.

White in the historical series includes the following: White only; White and "Other race," and White and multiracial category; and White, "Other race," and multiracial category.

Black in the historical series includes the following: Black only; Black and White; Black and "Other race," and Black and multiracial category; and Black and two or more other races, excluding AIAN and API (and excluding Hispanic in Panels E and F).

AIAN in the historical series includes the following: AIAN only; AIAN and White; AIAN and "Other race," and AIAN and multiracial category; and AIAN and two or more other races, excluding Black and API (and excluding Hispanic in Panels E and F).

API in the historical series includes the following: API only; API and White; API and "Other race," and API and multiracial category; and API and two or more other races, excluding Black and AIAN (and excluding Hispanic in Panels E and F).

Hispanic in the historical series includes the following: Hispanic only; Hispanic and White; Hispanic and "Other race," and Hispanic and multiracial category; and Hispanic and two or more races, excluding Black, AIAN, and API.

The classifications of responses included in the historical series are indicated in footnotes in Table I-1 through Table I-32.

The third data line under percent of responses shows the percent reporting the specified race or origin only or in combination with any other response and is described here as the all-inclusive approach. The all-inclusive approach thus shows the percentage of respondents who identified themselves in a specified race or origin group in any way (alone or in combination with some other identification). In contrast to the historical series approach, the all-inclusive approach can classify a respondent in two or more categories, and the percentages in the categories thus add to more than 100 percent. For example, a respondent in Panel C who reported as Black and as Asian or Pacific Islander would be included as Black in the percentage on the third data line in Table I-9 and as Asian and Pacific Islander in the percentage on the third data line in Table I-25.

C.1.4 General Information About the Detailed Tables

Shading in a cell means "not applicable" and represents a variety of reasons. In the case of a racial or ethnic category, not applicable means that the category did not appear on the panel or is not appropriate for the specific panel comparison. Three examples follow. In Table 1-1R, a multiracial category was not included in Panel A. In Table 3-1R, the unrequested multiple response category is not applicable for Panel H because respondents who marked more than one race in response to the "all that apply" instruction were classified as multiple race. In Table 9-1R, Hispanic is not applicable for Panel B because it had separate race and Hispanic origin questions.

The first and third sets of tables show standard errors of estimated percentages and 90-percent confidence intervals of estimated differences in percentages between panels. Differences that are statistically significant at the 90-percent confidence level are indicated with an asterisk. The second set of tables shows standard errors of estimated percentages. For more information on sampling error, see Chapter 3 and Appendix B.
