1940 Census of Population: Estimates of Labor Force, Employment, and Unemployment in the United States, 1940 and 1930

This report is designed to provide a basis for comparison of labor force statistics of the 1930 and 1940 censuses, by age and sex.

In addition, it provides a classification of persons in the labor force by employment status, for use in studying trends in employment and unemployment, and the incidence of unemployment by age and sex. A description in detail of processes by which the estimates and adjustments were made is also included.

A Note on Language

Census statistics date back to 1790 and reflect the growth and change of the United States. Past census reports contain some terms that today’s readers may consider obsolete and inappropriate. As part of our goal to be open and transparent with the public, we are improving access to all Census Bureau original publications and statistics, which serve as a guide to the nation's history.
